Newscast from Tanzania: the Chinese technology helps the local farmers obtain high rice yield of 10t/ha in the demo paddy plots in 4 villages, Dakawa, Morogoro

In the rain season in 2016/2017, the Chinese experts from the Tanzanian Demonstration Centre of China Agricultural Technology at Dakawa, Morogoro, in cooperation with the local experts from ARI_Chollima of MALF and the agricultural extension officers from Dakawa ward and Mvomero district, Morogoro region, have carried out the village level rice cultivation demonstration project in the rain fed plots in Wami Sokoine village and Wami Luhindo village and in the irrigated plots in Wami Dakawa village and Kwa Muhuzi village, Dakawa, Morogoro, with 60 farmers involved and several hundreds more local farmers in the district encouraged.

Under the demonstration project, the Chinese experts provide the local farmer the guideline of paddy rice cultivation technology for high yield, the technical instruction and consultation in field as well as a certain amount of seeds, fertilizers and chemicals. The local farmer learnt and practiced the Chinese technology in the demonstration paddy plots.

As the result, the rice in demonstrated paddy plots has performed very well, with bump harvests. According to farmers’ own yield weighing in the harvest, the unit yield in the 2 rain fed demo plots has reached 8.06 t/ha (3.23t/acre) in average, with the maximum of 8.60 t/ha (3.44 t/acre); meanwhile, the unit yield in the 4 irrigated demo plots has reached 8.95 t/ha (3.58t/acre) or nearly 9 t/ha in average, with the maximum of 10.08 t/ha (4.03 t/acre), the attached APPENDIX_A Short Report on the Village Demonstration Project Written by Mr. Rajun Ismail Kisavuli can be taken as the reference.

With the high yield records in the paddy demo plots in the 4 village, the Chinese technology has been warmly praised and willingly received by local the farmers. More and more local farmers show their intention to apply the Chinese technology in their own paddy fields for the high yield and good income in the coming years.
